I worked in a Factory Office so from a shy 18 year old I quickly learnt and adapted to working in a practically male environment, took the banter and slowly started to interact better. Pushed myself forward and made myself speak up if I didn't agree with something. The old saying springs to mind "you have a tongue in your head" (my Nan was brilliant delivering these sayings) so I used this thought. Now my Nan was Business woman, a force not to be reckoned with! She ran the families Livestock/Bulk Haulage Business and boy she was in charge. I used to call her handbag "The Gold Reserve". She kept her false teeth wrapped in a hankie alongside the packet of mint imperials and her 4711 perfume and not forgetting the cheque book in her bag. She was a big inspiration to me. I learnt to drive and my Grandparents bought me a new car to practice in. I loved my Mini.
I had to pass my test first time. I couldn't let the car sit on the drive and I couldn't drive it, so yes I passed. (My boss hated the fact I had a new car and he had a battered old Rover) At last living out in the countryside I could get out and about. Buses were available but only about two a day, this ruined a teenagers life! So the countryside (the sticks) had it's pros and cons. A big nightmare in the winter especially if it was icy and snowing. Not forgetting the Great Storm of 1987. We lost electricity and the telephone lines were down for days. Primitive lifestyle for a few days and cooking on a "primus" stove was fun but dangerous. The smell of paraffin wafting through the house. It was a wonder we wasn't high as a kite on the fumes!
